Purpose

To help the team learn the emotions of others and think differently about how the group is feeling at the beginning of any activity or workshop.

Instruction

  1. Select one team member to draw a wavy line across the workshop space board. Ensure the line resembles a rollercoaster track made up of loops, high and low sections.
  2. To begin, look at the rollercoaster track and think about how you are feeling. Which parts of the track represent the intensity of your emotion? Once you have identified your position, mark the area using a shape of your choice.
  3. Head to the feelings area in the Tools section and search for the emotion that you are feeling. Bring this back to the workshop space and place it on top, where you have marked your position.
  4. When you have completed your check-in, zoom out a little and take a look at the overall picture as a whole. The space is now open to share and discuss any thoughts that may emerge.
  5. At the end of the session, group the drawing, bring the rollercoaster artwork to the Journey space. Date it and sign off.

Facilitator Notes

  • Good to rotate or select someone new each time to draw a new rollercoaster track! This keeps each track different and everyone gets to have a go.
  • Guide participants to use the tools on the board as this encourages them to use non-verbal means of expression.
  • Depending on the size of the group, for larger groups, try spitting the group up into breakout rooms through Zoom or your video conferencing app. This can provide a safe, intimate space for participants to share their thoughts.
  • If groups have been split into the breakout rooms, allow 5 mins for discussion. After, bring the group back into the main room and open up the floor again for any groups who would like to share interesting thoughts from the activity.
